Do you have trouble in your HP 540 laptop keyboard, do you know how to fix it by yourself? OK, here’s the step-by-step procedure for repairing the HP 540 laptop keyboard:
1.Disconnect any cables linked to the keyboard. Warm up soldering iron, prepare your tools and plug in the soldering iron.
2.Turn the keyboard over and get out the 5 phillips-head screws fixed on the bottom of the keyboard. Remove the bottom casing, lift out the keyboard assembly, the top casing will be also removed.
3.With a flat-blade screwdriver, pry up the key cap from the broken key and the surrounding key caps.
4.Turn the keyboard over, locate the 2 pins coming out of the broken switch. Unsolder these connections. Attention, overheat the connection may leave the foil on the board. And a pair of needle-nose pliers may help you to move the unsoldered pins .
5.Turn the keyboard back over. Press on the 2 tabs at the top and the bottom of the switch. While you are pressing these tabs inwards, lift out the switch. Please be patient not to break or damage the stem.

6.Now, let us begin the repair. For the “floating” keyswitch, just glue the top and bottom halves of the switch together, and skip the next step. As to the “dead switch” ,do the following:
a. Insert the blade of the screwdrivers between the gray tabs and the black upper body.Open the case. Being careful not to lose the small spring.
b. Stack 2 or three layers of self-adhesive paper labels together with a spare disk label, and cut it to about 3/8” square – a little smaller than the back of the contact assembly. Stick this paper “shim” to the back of the contact assembly.
c.Re-assemble the switch. Because of the labels, it may take a little pressure to get the top and bottom casings back together. Don’t forget to install the spring!
7.Test the keys. Using the 2 pieces of wire, solder one end of each to each of the pins on the back of the switch. Solder the end of one wire to one of the pads on the keyboard where the switch was soldered, and solder the other wire to the other pad. Now plug in your keyboard, turn on your laptop, and test out a few keys.If the modified key fails, take it apart and check your work. Disconnect the wires, check the pins, switch, to make sure they are in the right position.
8. Re-solder the switch into place. In order to clean the connection, you may spray a little flux remover, but any cleaner left inside the switch is not allowed!
9. Re-install your keyboard!
That is done. Take about ten minutes, you will have your HP 540 laptop keyboard fixed.
