Following up on their OSX 10.7 Lion report stating that the development of the new Mac operating system was ahead of schedule,TechCrunch have presented the flip side of OS development by reporting a rumor that the new version of Apple’s mobile device operating system, iOS 5, may in fact be facing delays.

Here is what they’re hearing:
● iOS 5 will launch in the fall and will be a major revamp of the OS.
● It could well be previewed at WWDC, it just won’t be released then.
● The iOS 5 launch is also likely to coincide with the release of a new type of iPad, which we previously reported on.
● The new iOS will be heavily built around the cloud, and we could see several new services launch from Apple that take advantage of this.
● Yes, one of those is very likely a “music locker” service. There is also a fall launch aim for this, during Apple’s annual music-themed event.
● But much of the cloud stuff will first be talked about at WWDC, Apple’s developer event which will take place in June.
● One of the new cloud service elements is likely a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members.
● As we said yesterday, OS X Lion is still on pace for a summer release — some of the new cloud components are likely to be baked into it as well.

So where does that leave the iPhone 5? Unclear. While Apple typically releases a new version of iOS concurrently with a new iPhone, the delay of iOS doesn’t necessarily mean that new Apple hardware is being pushed back until fall this time around. This is all speculation at this point, although FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger has gone on record to indicate that Apple might not have all of its gears in motion to support its annual summer iPhone launch.

If Apple does decide to release iOS 5 in the fall it would be a break from their typical schedule. It’s unclear if they would still launch a new iPhone in June/July or whether this would be pushed back for release alongside the new firmware.

However, Apple explained by the following reason: a gap between two antennas wrapped around its exterior that could be bridged by a finger placed in the wrong spot.

What’s more, Apple also explained it in this way, “Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong,” Apple’s letter read. “Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength.”

Some users said that if iPhone 4 is covered by a $29 rubber “Bumper Case”, the signal dropping problem will be not so obvious. Has Apple already known that there is problem related to the iPhone 4 antenna, and do they just want to solve this problem by the “Bumper Case”?
